World commission of forests and sustainable development (WCFSD) | Forestry in a changing political environment: challenges for the 21st century

Since its first meeting in in mid-1995, the Commission has been concerned: To listen to the perceptions and evidence of a wide range of different stakeholder gropus around the world on the key issues of how much forest needs to be preserved, by whom, and how should forests be managed and for whose benefits? To draw conclusions and develop recommendations for regulatory, institutional, fiscal policy reforms and political cations that foster more equitable and environmentally sensitive approaches to sustainable management of forest resources. To take a look ahead to the yera 2050 to assess how factors such as doubling of world population, increasing demands for food, energy and water resources, global warming, industrial pollution, soil toxification and biotic improverishment are likely to impact on forests, human welfare and the environment. To analyse how scientific research and forest development strategies in the 21st century can contribute to resolution of these global problems and to containment of further forest loss and degradation. To develop recommendations that will help to foster improved North/South collaboration in global forest related matters.
