Indigenous fruit tree germplasm improvement initiatives in Swaziland | The domestication and commercialisation of indigenous fruit trees in the SADC region

Swaziland has adopted an indigenous fruit tree domestication and improvement strategy developed by John and Brouard in 1994 which consists of the following: 1.Community preference surveys. The following species were considered to be of high priority; Sclerocarya birrea, Baquertiodendron meglalismontanium, Syzigium cordatum, Ximenia caffra and Vangueria infausta ( Dlamini, 1998). Seed of these species is being collected. 2.Provenance/progeny trials. A project proposal on the domestication and breedignof Sclerocarya birrea has been prepared and awaits approval by the Ministry of Economic Planning. 3.Establishment of seed orchards. A project on the conservation and propagation of indigenous edible fruit trees through the establishment and management of protected clonal and seedling seed orchards has been initiated by the National Tree Seed Centre and the Forestry Research Unit. 4.Identification and in situ management of superior seed sources. Seed sources have been identified in the following areas: Hlutse North, Mlawula, Bhunya and Sinceni.
