The potential contribution of wild tree food sources in broadening the food security base has been appreciated for a long time. However, there is need to assess the extent to which this potential has been addressed in Tanzania with emphasis on the utilisation and nutritive value of indigenous forest tree food products. The food products include seeds, nuts and fruit pulp. The varied uses of twenty tree species have been described in the available literature. The seeds are roasted and eaten or roasted, pounded and mixed in vegetable soup. Fruit segment or pulp is eaten directly or pounded and shaken in water and consumed directly or femented into an alcoholic drink. Some products are favoured by chicken while others are consumed by all age groups. Some are eaten in the wild while others are gathered and consumed at home. Food products from 18 species have been analysed for their nutritive value covering minerals, reducing sugars and ascorbic acid contents. Composition values exhibit wide variations.
