The small Mascarene oceanic islands (of which Maritius is part) present special challenges to the conservation of biodiversity because they are characterised by endemism, extensive habitat degradation and high rates of species extinction. The diverse climatic, geological and topographical regimes have favoured the evolution of diverse plant species with high degree of endemism. The Tree Seed Centre is part of the Forestry Service and both have a big role to play in the conservation of the unique vegetation types characteristic of these beautiful islands. The Tree Seed Centre in Mauritius is still very new and not yet fully operational.
