Handling of forest tree seeds in South Africa | Tree seed news
1999
Phala, T. | Shumba, E. M.
The National Tree Seed Centre of South Africa is based in Pretoria. It has been in existence for many years, providing seeds of both commercial and indigenous tree species to medium to large private nurseries and members of the community. The large forestry companies in South Africa also require seeds for their afforestation projects. Some companies meet their seed requirements form their own breeding and seed programmes, but some purchase commercial pine seed sources. The government of South Africa has put in place a policy that supports equitable development in the commercial and community forestry sectors of the country. The Seed Centre has to reflect this policy position in its mandate, strategies and operations. The Chief Directorate has implemented a short "option study" done by a private consultant to find ways of positioning the Seed Centre to be in-line with the Chief Directorate's policies and to be accessible to the whole community of South Africa.
