The paperbark acacia is a potential tree species for rural reforestation, rehabilitation of degraded sites, agroforestry and as an ornamental especially in semi-arid areas. The pods and branches are relished by both game and livestock, although they may contain lethal doses of prussic acid (Biegel and Mavi, 1972). The wood is also a potential source of firewood. Despite the widespread enthusiasm in the use of acacias in reforestation and agroforestry projects, there is little information on the development bilogy of some species seeds. The general concept has been to scarify the seeds in order to germinate them and no other dormancy mechanisms have yet been investigated except the seed coat dormancy. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether collecting seed earlier would produce seed with high germination while at the same time avoiding scarification by ensuring that the water tight membrane in the seedcoat does not fully develop.
