Crop load determination for apple cv. "Ligol"
2005
Kvikliene, N. | Kviklys, D.(Lithuanian Inst. of Horticulture, Babtai (Lithuania))
Thinning trials of apple cv. "Ligol" were conducted at the Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture in 2001-2004 in order to determine an optimal crop load. Two degrees of flower/fruitlet thinning (1 or 2 flowera/fruitlets per cluster) were applied at full bloom, at the end of flowering and when fruitlets size reached 10-12 mm. All thinning treatments had positive influence on fruit weight and size. Thinning had significant effect on flowering in next growing season. The highest flowering intensity was recorded when intensive thinning was applied during full bloom, but at the same time this treatment reduced apple yield significantly. The best practice to achieve high and annual yield of cv. "Ligol" in the young and full bearing orchard is to apply intensive thinning at the end of flowering, leaving one fruitlet per cluster
