Improving wood with thermic treatment has accompanied the evolution and history of human beings and has had a decisive influence on their lives. Target products and methods have changed. Right up to present times local conditions decide which products destined for various uses are produced by heattreating wood used to produce them. For example, in developing countries charcoal is easy to store and transport and is used as fuel, while in industrialised countries most of the charcoal sold is used for barbecues. In view of the increased use of biomass to ensure the future of the human race, heat-treatment methods to improve the properties of wood will continue to be highly valued.
