Influence of the short-time heat shock on the activity of antioxidant enzymes in cell as a whole and in the chloroplasts of winter rye seedlings of Pukhovchanka variety at the stages of coleoptile and the first true leaf was shown. Seedlings at the stage of first true leaf showed more intense reaction to the short-time heat shock then seedlings at the earlier stages. The observed reaction was expressed in the changes of activity of such antioxidant enzymes as ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase. The activity of catalase and peroxidase of guaiacol type was inhibited in the chloroplasts of heat-treated plants of various age groups. Seedlings of winter rye on coleoptile development stage integrally did not react on the short-time heat shock but the decrease of the activity of guaiacol peroxidase and catalase in chloroplasts indicated on stress sensitivity of these organelles at any plant age
