Influence of nitric oxide donor of sodium nitroprusside on total DNA fragmentation in tobacco (Nicotiana plumbaginifolia) leaves under hydrogen peroxide induced oxidative stress was revealed. Nitric oxide in micromolar concentration caused the total DNA fragmentation and its increasing under conditions of oxidative stress with the involvement of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) dependent signaling pathway. At the same time the nitric oxide exercised the protective action involving the cGMP-independent mechanism in the conditions of low nanomolar concentration
