The Gruza river belongs to the watershed of Black Sea. Over much of its course, the river represents a smallish stream with a relatively low volume of water. However, a large part of the geological substrate in the drainage area of the Gruza is characterized by inadequate resistance to the action of precipitation and extreme temperatures. This is especially true of parts of the river drainage are built of flysch, where torrential watercourses are a typical phonomenon. Apart from the main reason (to ensure a source of water supply for the town of Kragujevac), this was one of the factors governing the decision to build a dam on the Gruza river and form a multi-purpose reservoir.
