In the paper was presented the actual state of cattle production in Serbia and Montenegro. Total number of cattle in Serbia and Montenegro decrease continuosly during last ten years, but milk production per cow is in increasing line. Structure of breeds in total cattle population is Simmental 60%, Holstein 5% and other breeds about 35%. Because of high percentage of other breeds, milk production per cow is about 2000 kilograms. Consumption of fresh milk per capita increased from year to year, but beef consumption is in decreasing trend. For the improvement of cattle production in Serbia and Montenegro, first of all, there is a need for unique animal identification, better quality of feedstuff, specially forage feeds. Milk quality and hygiene of milk should to be on higher level. Farmers have to have more benefits regulated by Government, and extension services should to inform and educate farmers about recent advances in cattle production.
