During the two-year trials set up in two localities (Kraljevo, Cacak) on low productive or acid soils, an analysis was made on the yield and quality of lucerne and red clover dry matter with the use of liming of the arable layer of soil (3 t/ha CaO). Two lucerne cultivars Mediana and Slavia and Kolubara red clover cultivar were investigated. The dry matter yield achieved indicates their high genetic yield potential. A significant increase of the dry matter yield of the lucerne cultivars in the treatments with CaO in the first study year justifies the use of this measure on such soils. In the second investigation year the rate applied did not result in a significant yield increase indicating both the need for the standardization of the rates of lime material used depending on the pH value and other soil properties and the possibility of their deeper incorporation considering the lucerne root traits. The processes leading to a reduction in the soil pH (N fertilization, nitrogen fixation, mineralization and nitrification) could also cause the absence of a prolonged liming effect. The absence of a positive effect of this ameliorative measure in red clover confirms previous findings on its tolerance to lower pH values.
