Extensive multidisciplinary investigations were conducted with regard to municipal and industrial water supply for the town of Nis, Serbia (Serbia and Montenegro). The basic characteristics of the limestone formation of the Svrljig Mountains in the drainage area and immediate vinicity of the Krupac Spring were investigated in order to determine the additional quantities of groundwater that could be provided by this spring. Design concept selection was preceded by detailed hydrogeologic mapping of the drainage area, geophysical research, speleological/diving investigations, exploratory drilling, test pumping from the karst aquifer including drawndown to below the natural outflow level of the spring, groundwater level observations before and after pumping, generation of a mathematical model, geodetic surveys, and geochemical and other tests. The new engineering concept of groundwater abstraction from the Krupac Spring during the dry period, when the natural outflow dynamic is reduced to several tens of liters on account of water accumulated in the limestone aquifer below the natural outflow level of the spring (static reserves), is provide an additional amount of 200-300 l/s of water for the water supply system of Nis as early as the year 2005.
