The landscape Sargan Eight [Serbia] - new ecotourism destination

Through the landscape between Tara Mt. and Zlatibor Mt. (Serbia), across mountain Sargan (Serbia), on a narrow-gauge line (760 mm) connecting Belgrade (Serbia) with Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Dubrovnik (Croatia) since 1925 until 1974, the popular Cira train used to crouise. The 300 m difference of 3.5 km from Mokra Gora to Sargan, was resolved wisely by designers and constructors in a unique and the only possible way - by an extraordinary loop in the shape of number eight - popular Sargan Eight. The Eight was about 13.5 km long, including 22 tunnels, about ten bridges and viaducts, making one third of the total line length. After 25 years the Sargan Eight has been renewal (August 1999 - October 2002). The first official drive for tourists through whole railway route (13.5 km) will be on summer 2003. One of the most beautiful railway routes of the world is going to be revived, but now as a tourist railway. With a complex arrangement of landscape Sargan Eight, including necessary ecological protection, Serbia will get a new and very attractive ecotourism destination, and Serbian railway will have a unique tourist-museum offer in Europe and maybe in the world.
