Contemporary approach to development of irrigation systems

Geographic and economic position of the Republic of Serbia, with available potential of natural resources, imposes a justification for increase in food production by means of accelerated construction of irrigation systems. In conditions of intensified water economy problems, designing of irrigation systems is getting more and more importance. Considering that irrigation systems in Serbia are designed in complicated and specific natural and socio-economic surroundings, their planning should have characteristics of complexity, technical accuracy and economic rationality. Contemporary approach to solutions of numerous problems in irrigation must rely primarily on comprehensive monitoring of water economy problems concerning flood control, water supply and water quality control, bearing in mind sustainable development and environmental protection. In this paper, necessity of development, change and use of irrigation systems is summarized. Also, there are given goals which should fulfill every offered solution of irrigation systems, independent from process level.
