The research was carried out on two series of permanent research plots with mixed (spruce-fir-beech) forest stands established in 1972 and situated in the 5th forest altitudinal zone in the central part of Slovakia. Each of the series consisted of three plots as follows: 1) tending by free crown thinning; 2) a non-whole-area tending; 3) control plot. Dynamic changes in tree species composition, stand structure, qualitative and quantitative productions were evaluated during 29 years. A market decrease in the proportion of coniferous trees by 7-28% accompanied by an increase in the proportion of broadleaved trees by 7-26% was found on all plots. The number of the trees of selective quality was higher in experimental than in control plots, it was the highest one on plots with non-whole-area tending. The total production was slightly higher in experimental than in research plots, the highest values were found for beech and Douglas fir.
