The influence of NPK fertilization in different combinations (0:0:0, 0:40:100, 100:40:100, 200:40:100) on species richness and diversity of foxtail stand type was studied during the years 1967-2003. The grassland was situated at 363 m asl, it was mesophytic to mesohygrophytic. The best combination of NPK nutrients was 0:40:100 as the value of Simpson index indicating the species diversity was after 21-22 years superior to that of nonfertilized stands. Our study confirmed that the foxtail stand type is characterized by relatively low number of species and their high persistence. The dose of at least 100 kg N per ha with the appropriate application of P and K according to the soil fertility is necessary in order to maintain the dominance of Alopecurus pratensis in the plant community.
