Opportunities for improving dairy production in Ethiopia

Cow's milk production in Ethiopia stands at about 1.5 million tons per annum and is growing at 1.4% per year. The average per capita consumption is estimated at about 16 kg/year well below the world average of about 100 kg/year but trends over the last decade indicate that significant increases in production and consumption of milk will occur over the next 20 years. In order to meet the growing demand for milk in Ethiopia, milk production has to grow at the rate of at least 4% per annum. This calls for the design of appropriate policies and institutions that consider the existing socio-economic and agro-ecological circumstances and build on the demand of consumers and needs and opportunities of producers. Promoting and supporting producer organizations will facilitate linkages to markets and adoption of productivity enhancing technologies. Improving feed supply and utilization, enhancing the genetic background of dairy animals, and controlling major diseases will result in a more productive and efficient dairy sector. Case studies show that these interventions can result in higher incomes and better nutrition at household level.
