An efficient method to select early-flowering seedlings of strawberry in the nursery was developed by exposing to short day (8hr photoperiod) and low temperature (12 deg C) at night with use of small pots. 1. Seedlings in small pots (60-190ml) that are sensible to the short-day and low-night-temperature treatment have larger crown than 4mm in diameter and more than 11 true leaf number, including mono- and di-foliate ones. These seedlings can be obtained in August by sowing the seeds until the middle of April in the central part in Japan. 2. Ten to 30 % of 'Sachinoka' x 'Pistro' hybrid seedlings initiate flower buds within 70 days and 4 leaves emerged after exposing to 15 cycles of the short-day and low-night-temperature treatment, and these seedlings are clearly distinguished with the other seedlings that require more days and leaves after the treatment for the flower bud initiation. More cycles of the short-day and low-night-temperature treatment make the starting time of flower bud initiation earlier, but some seedlings not having early-flowering property also initiate flower buds soon after the treatment. 3. In the case of using a small pot which contains 60-190ml in capacity, early- flowering seedlings can be obtained efficiently by selecting the flower-initiated seedlings in proper days after about 25 cycles of short-day and low-night-temperature treatment.
