The adaptability of a formula for estimating the amount of nitrogen absorbed (absorbed nitrogen (g/m(2)/14days) = increased leaves (no./m(2)/14days) x 0.0383 + 1.856) in autumn cucumber, cultivated using drip tubes, was tested as a fertilization index, The amount of nitrogen applied was reduced to 17.2g/m(2), which constituted a saving of 23% over conventional fertilization methods, without reducing the yield, The adaptability of this formula was tested, using five training methods, with different leaf appearance patterns. Although the yields differed, the amount of nitrogen fertilizer differed only slightly, in the range from 17.9 to 19.4g/m(2), which amounts to 72 to 66% of the 27.2g/m(2) used in conventional fertilization. In conclusion, this formula for estimating the amount of nitrogen absorbed can be applied to save fertilizer in the cultivation of autumn cucumber, grown using drip tubes.
