In the present study, sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) and momi (Abies firma Sieb. et Zucc) logs were smoke-heated for 35 hours at a temperature of 80 deg C inside the log. After that, 2 by 4 lumber was sawn from smoke-heated and control logs to evaluate the effects of smoke heating on the mechanical properties of lumber sawn from the logs. The 2 by 4's were examined to determine their strength properties. The following tests were conducted: dynamic Young's modulus (DMOE), modulus of elasticity in static bending (MOE), and modulus of rupture in static bending (MOR). Almost no significant differences (5% level) between control and smoke-heated woods were found in the DMOE, MOE, and MOR values of the 2 by 4's. Significant positive correlations were found between DMOE and MOE or MOR. These results indicate that DMOE showed a recommendable indicator for the non-destructive estimation of the MOE and MOR of smoke-heated 2 by 4's.
