The purpose of this paper is to explain the economic factors affecting the steady decline in the number of Korean farms. With the panel data for the livestock industry during 1968~2001, the annual net decline in the number of livestock farms is regressed by the lagged number of farms and other political economic variables. As a result, this study suggests that the decline number of Korean livestock farms is positively affected by the farm income and the geographical intensity of livestock production, and is negatively related to the self-sufficiency rate of livestock products and the ratio of agricultural selling price index/agricultural purchasing price index.
