The model ORYZA 2000 stimulates the growth and development of rice under conditions of potential production and water and N limitations. It has been evaluated for lowland rice grown in the tropics but was not been tested on traditional inbred rice or aerobic rice varieties (high-yielding rice grown in nonflooded, nonpuddled soil) in the temperate zone. The authors used 3-year field experimental data from Liulfuankou Irrigation Systems, China, to evaluate the "goodness of fit" of the model in stimulating the growth and development of one traditional inbred (XD90247) and two aerobic rice varieties (HD502 and HD297). In 2001 and 2002, the varieties were grown under different irrigation regimes. In 2003, treatments with varying N inputs and spacing were added. The authors graphically compared the simulated and measured values of biomass, leaf area index (LAI), and yield, and calculated the adjusted coefficient of correlation of the regression between the stimulated and measured values, the absolute and normalized root mean square errors (RMSE and NRMSE). The linear relationship between simulated and measurest values was highly significant, with r values ranging from 0.85 to 0.99. The NRMSE values were 11-36% by XD90247, 15-53% for HD297, and 42-67% for HD502. The RMSE for yields was 660 kg/ha for XD90247, 768 kg/ha for HD297, and 1991 kg/ha for HD502. The evaluation showed that ORYZA 2000 was sufficiently accurate in simulating crop variables for inbred rice and was acceptable for aerobic rice grown in a temperate environment. The model can be used to support water field experiments in exploring the effects of management options (such as water management, fertilization, and plant density) on growth and development of inbred and aerobic rice varieties.
