In 2004, PR26873-PJ21-2-1 also known as PJ21, a line developed in the breeding activity by PhilRice and Japanese breeders under a PhilRice _JICA collaboration, was recommended by the Rice Varietal Improvement Group to the National Seed Indusrty Council (NSIC) to be released as a variety for the irrigated lowlands this 2005. PJ21 was selected from the progenies of the cross PR 266 73-6-Bs/Burdagol. PR 266 73-6-Bs was from the cross between Sasanishiki, a japonica variety, and IR64, a popular indica variety. PJ21 is a high yielding rice selection, with average yields of 5.35 t/ha as transplanted (TPR) and 5.38 t/ha as direct seeded (DSR) in the Multi-location Adaptation Trials of the National Cooperative Tests for Rice. It yielded the check, PSB Rc28 by 6.6% and 3.2% in the TPR and DSR, respectively. It matures in around 107 days as TPR and 103 days as DSR, with average plant height of 88 cm and average number of productive tillers per hill of 14 and/or 236 tillers per linear meter. It has a wide spectrum of field resistance to blast, bacterial leaf blight, sheath blight, stemborer, green leaf hopper and yellow stem borer. However, it should not be planted to hot spot areas of tungro virus disease and brown plant hopper. It has a good grain and eating quality, having low amylose content and intermediate to low gelatinization temperature. PJ21 apparently retained the good grain and eating quality characteristics of its parents, IR64, Burdagol and Sasanishiki. The unique feature of this line is its dual adaptability to TPR and DSR culture. It is to be registered as NSIC Rc134 or Tubigan 4 awaiting approval by the NSIC. Basic nucleus seeds have been submitted for breeder seed production.
