Quantitative and qualitative characteristics of organic matter in two shallow lakes (Mazurian Lakeland, Poland)

The quantity and quality of organic matter was studied in two shallow lakes, differing with respects to morphometric properties and development in the direct watershed. The investigations were carried out in April 2002 through February 2003. The content of organic carbon was analysed, which is usually equated with the quantity of organic matter. The dominant from of organic carbon was the dissolved fraction (DOC). The ranges and mean concentrations of DOC quality both lakes as eutrophic. The main source of organic matter is the autochthonous production
