Studies on breeding value of yellow-grained forms of winter rye
2003
Bujak, H., E-mail: [email protected]
Studies were carried out to evaluate the usefulness of yellow-grained lines for production of three-way and double hybrids of winter rye. The plant material consisted of single crosses (A x B) in which yellow-grained lines were female parents and three-way crosses (A x B)CMS x C where yellow grained forms were used as male parents (C). Three-way crosses (A x B)CMS x C and double crosses (A x B)CMS x (C x D) were also produced using the same maternal forms. The hybrids were tested in three series of experiments at several locations. Result of the studies show that genetic advance will be obtained in hybrid rye breeding by creating double crosses according to formula (A x B)CMS x (C x D)XH. Yields of double crosses were significantly higher than three-way crosses. The best double hybrids yielded significantly higher than the variety Esprit
