The objective of the studies was to determine the relationships between the sexual activity at oestrus and fertility of the gilts of Pulawska breed. The tests were performed on 96 gilts born between 2000 and 2001 at the Experimental Farm in Czeslawice (Poland). Observations of sexual behaviour of the gilts started after they were 140-days-old and were performed during three subsequent spontaneous oestrus, and then the duration of the oestrus was measured by the duration of the positive touch and mounting tests as well as boar tolerance. The observations of 3 subsequent oestrus provided the test for gilt inclusion into one of four treatment groups: I - very calm gilts, demonstrating oestrus very clearly, responding to a boar and a mount attempt for about 30-35 seconds, II - calm gilts, showing oestrus clearly, reacting to boar and mount attempt for about 20-25 seconds, III - gilts showing oestrus poorly, responding to boar and mount attempt for about 5 seconds, IV - gilts refusing any touch or mount, hardly mated. The gilts mated with two Pulawska boars. The first tolerance reflex of the gilts occurred on 169. 3rd day, at mean body weight of 83.6 kg. High individual differentiation of the features was revealed and the values of standard deviation were 22.0-days-old and 9.6 kg body weight. The gilts from groups I and II showed higher coefficients of reproductive performance compared to those of poorer sexual activity - groups III and IV. The studies revealed that only gilts clearly manifesting the tolerance reflex should be directed to herd renovation
