Manufacture of fertilizers from waste ammonia in Khartoum Refinery
2005
Elfadol, Y.A.
Urea and ammonium aulphate fertilizers are very important for agriculture in the Sudan. Sudan imports 200,000 tons of urea per year amounting to about $ 60 million per year in addition to an equivalent amount of ammonium sulfate and superphosphate fertilizers. The cost of transport, loading and unloading are also expensive and time consuming. From this study, it is proved that fertilizer plant for both urea and ammonium sulphate, need to be constructed and operated. The availability of raw material such as ammonia, naphtha and LPG make these types of plants quite feasible. In the early eighties, a urea fertilizer plant was constructed in Khartoum South (Alshajara area), and although the plant was built and all the equipment were installed, this type of plant is now obsolete and needs to be renewed, in addition to this, its location is questionable. The ammonia byproduct from Khartoum refinery is now discharged to open area causing a serious air pollution. This needs to be treated as soon as possibleit is one of the alternatives for the production of fertilizers
