Potato cyst nematode (Globodera pallida)
2006
Trifonova, Z.
Potato cyst nematode Globodera pallida is quarantine pest for Bulgaria (guarantine status: EPPO A2 list N 124). Potatoes are by far the most important host crop. Nematodes are dispersed with soil debris and plant material contaminated by the cysts and by infected potato tubers. This cyst forming nematode has sedentary endoparasitic habits. Cysts are persistent tanned sacs derived by the female body and contain the eggs. Cysts persists in soil for more then 10 years. The symptoms of globodera are not specific. There are two potato cyst nematodes- G. rostochiensis and G. pallida very closely related species. At present three pathotypes of G. pallida are recognised in Europe. Identification of potato cysts nematodes (PCN) is based on a combination of morphological/morphometrical characters and biochemical techniques (immunology, protein, electrophoresis and DNA).
