Effect of arsenic contamination on the microbial changes of two paddy soils
2007
Kaloyanova, N.
Pot experiment with two paddy soils (Fluvisol and Vertisol) was carried out. Dynamics of CO2 production, microbial biomass, specific respiration rate, bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi were studied. It was established that CO2 production was higher with Vertisol as compared to Fluvisol, due to the amount of higher organic matter content of the Vertisol. Microbial biomass C is increasing steadily from the beginning of the experiment with the Vertisol and decreasing with the Fluvisol. As a whole the addition of wheat straw decreases the values of specific respiration rates. The values of specific respiration rates were higher at the end of the experiment, showing that the condition of stress is increasing with the duration of the As contamination. Тhe addition of As decreases the amount of bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi in both paddy soils. The decrease was the highest with the bacteria population. The number of fungi steadily decreases during th e experiment due also to the flooding of the soils. The nitrification activity was greatly inhibited as well. Denitrification occurred due to the higher microbial diversity participating in this process
