Technological features of wool from the Northest Bulgarian merino sheep breed - Dobrudja type, reared in the Dobrudja institute of agriculture - General Toshevo

For the purpose of this study, commercial batches of merino wool originating from the sheep-breeding farm of the Dobrudja Institute of Agriculture – General Toshevo, produced in 2004 and 2005, were sorted and washed. For comparative purposes, one batch of Bulgarian merino wool, produced in 2004, two batches imported from Russia (produced in 2004 and 2005 respectively), one batch merino wool imported from Romania in 2004 and one batch of previously sorted Australian merino wool (imported in 2005) were also investigated. The batches of unwashed wool were submitted to sorting, control washing, and the amount of washed wool and the technological yield was determined. The washed wool was studied for: water content (%), residual grease content (%), dirt content (%), vegetable matter (%), fineness (µm), average fibre length (mm), and short fibre content (%). The technological properties of Australian wool were significantly superior to all other batc hes. The wool from the Dobrudja Institute of Agriculture – General Toshevo had a high relative share of uniform wool – 82.41% and 84.61% , high proportion of grade 64andrsquo;s worsted wool – 69.29% and 70.46% and a high technological yield of fine wool – 54.63% and 55.17%, thus being superior to the pooled Bulgarian batch, the Russian and especially the Romanian batches. Considering the quality and the prices of the studied batches, the purchase prices of the wool from the Dobrudja Institute of Agriculture – General Toshevo are estimated as very low, non-conforming to the quality and non-stimulating.
