Se realizaron ensayos de competencia de R. exaltata en caña de azúcar (Saccharum sp. híbrido) var. “C. 87-51“, durante la etapa de caña planta, en suelo Ferralítico Rojo de la Estación Experimental del Instituto de Investigaciones de Sanidad Vegetal (IISV), en un diseño de bloques al azar con parcelas divididas para determinar el momento en que intensidades de 10, 20, 40 y 80 plantas/m2 producían una disminución del rendimiento equivalente al precio de realización de la caña de azúcar y del azúcar como producto elaborado incluyendo, en este último caso, el ahorro de petróleo por uso del bagazo como combustible; a tal efecto se estableció competencia durante 30, 60 y 90 días. Se incluyeron variantes desyerbadas y enyerbadas todo el periodo. Se determinó que por efecto de la competencia mantenida durante todo el periodo, en áreas donde predomina R. exaltata, los rendimientos pueden afectarse hasta un 51,7 % y que el umbral se encuentra entre 20 y 40 plantas/m2 con cobertura de malezas del 28,8 % cuando éste se establece sobre la base del valor de realización de Ia caña de azúcar y entre 10 y 20 plantas/m2 con una cobertura de 9,8 % cuando se refiere al valor del azúcar incluyendo el ahorro de petróleo por uso del bagazo como combustible, ambos a partir de los 30 días hasta un máximo de 60. Fuera de este período no es económico el combate.
