A field experiment was carried out in 2002 and 2003 to evaluate the effect of different levels of P and farmyard manure fertilizations on potato growth and tuber yields. The potato variety Asante was tested in a randomized complete block design with three replications. P rates (0, 52.2 and 100.4 kg/ha) and farmyard manure (0, 10 and 20 t/ha) were applied either singly or in combination. The application of P and farmyard manure had a significant effect on tuber dry weight. On the contrary, shoot dry weight and total yield depended rather on the season and year. A combination of P at 100.4 kg/ha and manure at 20 t/ha resulted in an increase of tuber dry weight by 82% and fresh tuber yield by 62%. The number of tubers and shoot dry weight were also affected.
