Pre-tests for mosaic (Sugarcane Mosaic Virus-SCMV) and smut (Ustilago scitaminea) are annually conducted at the Sugarcane Breeding Program of the Federal University of São Carlos (PMGCA), Brazil, since 1980. At the third selection stage (T3), the puncture method are used to inoculate 50 single buds seed cane of each test-genotypes with smut spores. The same seedlings, 30-40 days later, are inoculated with juice from SCMV infected stalks by the air-brush inoculation method. Two months after inoculation, the percent of symptomatic plants are scored and disease incidence compared with standard varieties for mosaic resistance. The same procedure is done weekly for smut. From the necessity of easily catalog, analyse, access and handle this volume of data which is generated annually, it was developed the DiScreen®: a software to assist screening for sugarcane diseases resistance. It uses the Delph language for Windows environment as a toll of work. Besides the data bank function of the routine IMPUT, the software performs linear regressions between disease incidence of standard cultivars and its scores 2, 5 and 8 for resistant, intermediate and susceptible reaction, respectively. Based on the mathematic equation obtained, transforms the disease incidence of testgenotypes in scores (1 a 9) and, consequently, classify them accordingly with resistance degree. At the routine GRAFICS, it is possible to print the linear regression, frequency of susceptibility in each selection serie. FINDING is a routine where either the reaction of an specific genotype or the list of those susceptible ones that will receive special attention on the field tests. In the present paper, we describe the evolution of the screening for smut and mosaic resistance assisted by the computer program DiScreen® currently in use by the PMGCA.
