The wide spectrum of disease-resistance incorporated to breeding material is an important factor responsible for the adoption of released sugarcane cultivars. This has been accomplished with persistent and basic studies about each important disease and the development of practical and dependable methods of testing the resistance of clones under selection. In spite of the success in releasing resistant cultivars, to much high-yielding sugarcane genotypes are discarded due to susceptibility to one or another important disease. The identification of sugarcane genes associated with disease resistance represents an interesting approach to correct this defect by introducing such genes in a susceptible cultivars through plant transformation. Also, genes for resistance could be used as molecular markers for assisted selection, eliminating the need of inoculum source, inoculations, and greenhouses for experiments, etc. New discoveries can breakthrough present constraints. The Sugarcane Est Project (SUCEST), sponsored by FAPESP in São Paulo State, just completed the sequencing of more than 40 thousands genes and grouped more than 200 researchers working on such subject. Five of the groups are intensively annotating sugarcane ESTs homologous to genes responsible for resistance to plant diseases. In this talk, we discuss the current work being done in the Federal University of São Carlos, some findings in the SUCEST and the perspectives for the newer future.
