Perennial grasses are cultivated on a large area of agricultural land in Lithuania. Several legume species are grown on a wider scale in various regions of the country, among which very important are the following ones: red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), white clover (T. repens L.) and alsike clover (T. hybridum L.). Red clover is one of the key legumes in a field crop rotation, whereas white clover in pasture mixtures. Alsike clover is mostly grown on wet and acid soils, where other clover species perform poorly. The significance of clover is many-sided. Clover fixes atmospheric nitrogen, increases the productivity of mixed swards, raises the content of nitrogen in the soil, and improves forage quality and intake (Daugeliene, 2002, Kadziuliene, 2004, Sprainaitis, 2005).
