The experiments were conducted at the Lithuanian Institute of Agriculture during the period 1999-2005. The methods used in the smooth-stalked meadow grass breeding included individual selection of wild ecotypes and selection of sexually reproducing plants with the use of apomixis in S2 generation. The two new smooth-stalked forage- type varieties 'Gaja' and 'Dane' have been developed by the method of wild ecotypes selection. 'Gaja' is a very late-maturing and productive variety. It is characterised by luxuriance, leafiness (79.2%), long and wide leaves and large inflorescences. 'Dane' is also very late-maturing, is noted for leafiness (87.3%), relatively high crude protein content in dry matter (18.15%) and high digestibility (61.84%). Using the method of sexually reproducing plants selection and apomixis in S2 generation, four promising lines have been developed: forage-type genotype (catalogue No. 2269), grazing-type genotype (catalogue No. 1224) and lawn-type genotypes (catalogue No. 1853 and No. 2113).
