Research about development of Riga groundwater resources. Resume of academic thesis for doctor's degree in water resource engineering science, subbranch of water management science
2005
Juhna, V.
The thesis deals with the problems connected with the growth of Riga city (Latvia), the development of current engineering structure of the city and sufficient amount of good quality drinking water supply to its residents. In the thesis the reasons of reduction of water consumption in Riga have been analyzed and general conclusions have been made. The work shows the perspective data of water consumption until 2010. The work points out the hydro-geological features of the water resources in Riga simultaneously discussing the problems of water quality in Lake Mazais Baltezers, Lake Lielais Baltezers, Riga Hydro-electrical Dam waterworks and underground water resources. The existing and potential under-groundwater resources are studied. The proposals are made for their utilization and development in the period between 2001 till 2010. The extended analyses of water extraction from Baltezers waterworks were performed and the results were submitted for consideration. Biological iron and manganese are studied. The work shows that the old method of the well regeneration is not efficient. The construction of the new wells from un-corrosive materials with higher yield was worked out. The specific yield of such wells were calculated and presented. The work presents the results of the monitoring of the new wells: their efficiency, the electric power consumption, and the changes in the levels of subsoil waters in the wells. The alternative for groundwater abstraction was proposed. The possibilities of changing of the existing vacuum system to the pressure system, which is more practical in operation, were shown. The conclusions and suggestions about possibilities of development of water resources in Riga providing safe drinking water supply were drown last part of thesis.
