Risk analysis of abaca virus disease epidemics and decision-making towards sustainable management strategies in the Philippines

The risk of epidemics of bunchy-top and mosaic virus diseases in abaca was analyzed by analytical modeling, computer simulation and geographic Information System (GIS) technology. based on rates of infection computed using analytical models, destructive levels of epidemics can occur in the next few years in the Visayas region [Philippines]. GIS modeling has confirmed this prediction. Computer simulation, using detailed cycles of disease and the insect vector, likewise, provided a similar forecast. Based on the calculated risks, sustained disease eradication drives aided by epidemiological information are being recommended to prevent this prediction from turning into reality.
