Information on the comparative performance of adapted goat breeds in a prerequisite for their optimal utilization and conservation. Individual performance records are needed to identify the best animals in a breed and serve as guide in buying and selling them. In this regard, this paper reviews the Philippine Goat Breed Registry (PGBR) including (a) its rationale, scope, purpose, registry rules and regulations and (b) its contributions to research in genetic improvement and conservation. The PGBR was a pioneering strategy that promotes the use of a practical recording system in a local breeding base with no tradition of keeping records of animal performance. Through the multi-breed registry, a standardized recording and evaluation system was developed based on selective registrations of adapted goats. Practical strategies in support of selection and/or crossbreeding were employed through the PGBR including analyses of large on-farm data sets, derivation of relative economic values and selection indexes, and estimation of general and specific combining abilities for some economically important traits. The PGBR also facilitated identification of superior and unique native goats that may be conserved in situ or ex situ. The PGBR should be continued and expanded to include majority of the goat breeder population. It requires institutional support in the form of subsidies from the national and local governments, the academe, private breeding companies and local farmers' associations. The multi-breed registry is also recommended for use as an operational model in the identification, characterization, genetic improvement and conservation of other livestock species in the Philippines.
