Chrysanthemum is one of the major cut flowers of the world and efforts have been made to make its production efficient and profitable especially when planting under open conditions where physical environmental factors may become unfavorable for growth and development. The performance of the cutting is usually influenced by the quality of stock plants where they come from. It is therefore imperative that varieties for cut flower production should be screened for productivity and cutting quailities. Stocked plants of 12 varieties of chrysanthemum were grown under a screenhouse with transparent plastic roofing and green screen plastic mesh in all sides. The same 12 varieties were grown in the open field. Cuttings from stock plant grown in both conditions were allowed to root for 21 days and evaluated in terms of cutting fresh weight, stem diameter, root number, and root length. The productivity of the stock plants was also determined. Significant differences in the growth of the stock plants were observed among the varieties. There was a decrease in the quality of the cuttings harvested from stock plants grown under open conditions. They had smaller basal stem diameter, lesser weight and root number. The roots were also shorter. On the other hand, stock plants grown under covered condition were healthier and bushier with lesser incidence of disease caused by Pseudomonas cichorii. They were also taller and had more lateral branches. As a consequence, the cuttings they produced were of better quality. Cut Nyak Rien was the only variety which performed well in both open and covered conditions. For the rest of the varieties evaluated, protective structures should be provided to both stock plants and cuttings for flower production.
