In 2002 and 2003, 68 soil samples were collected from different terraced paddies in three municipalities (Banaue, Hungduan and Kiangan) of Ifugao. The samples were evaluated for fertility limitations through soil analysis (SA) and minus-one element technique (MOET). SA indicated the acidic nature of the soils, mostly with light-medium texture, C:N ratio of 10, and high organic matter (OM) content. Soil fertility varied within and between the three municipalities. Low amount of available P, exchangeable K and available Zn and S was recorded for 10.3 percent, 12.8 percent and 5.1 percent of the soils in Banaue, respectively. In Hungduan, 14.3 percent of the soils were low in P, and 33.3 percent low in K. Available Zn and S are not limiting in all soil samples. In Kiangan, 10 percent and 20 percent of the soils were low in P and K, respectively. Zn, S and Cu were above critical level. All soils had very high amount of soluble Fe. MOET analysis indicated N deficiency in all soil samples. In Banaue, 67.6 percent, 62.2 percent, 25.4 percent and 19.5 percent of the soils were deficient in K, S, Zn and P, respectively. Deficiency in S, K, Zn and P was observed in 66.2 percent, 64.7 percent, 42.1 percent and 39.0 percent of the soils from Hungduan, respectively. In Kiangan soils, 28.6 percent, 22.6 percent and 14.3 percent had limiting amount of S, K and Zn, respectively. Zn deficiency was correlated with high amounts of OM. Multiple nutrient deficiencies were observed, which limit the soil fertility in the rice terraces of Ifugao. These deficiencies should be addressed in the formulation of an efficient nutrient management package for increased and sustained soil productivity in the terraces.
