Akhtar, R. (National Agricultural Research Centre, Islamabad (Pakistan))
Aromatic and medicinal plants are traditionally used for centuries in different parts of Pakistan. There is great potential for developing medicinal and aromatic plants sector to increase earning in local as well as export market. There are approximately 400 species of medicinal plants marketed locally for use by the local pharmaceutical manufacturer and traditional practitioners. In primitive tribal communities where modern health facilities are not available, the homemade preparation of herbal medicine for domestic consumption is common. Several species of wild medicinal plants are exported and some other species are imported for local pharmaceutical industry although they are found wild in our area. There is lot of potential for cultivating these species for commercial scale but due to lack of coordinated efforts this sector has not been able to develop to its full capacity. Some of these wild plant species are listed in this article with c olored illustrations to highlight the potential of wild plant.
