A total of 40 Holstein-Friesian cows were used in this study. Cows were assigned into two groups containing of 20 pregnant cows (10-1 d before calving) and 20 cows in early lactation ( 1-10 d postpartum). Blood samples were collected from the animals by jugular vein puncture, the blood was allowed to clot at room temperature. Serum was separated by centrifugation at 3000 rpm. Serum NEFA concentration was evaluated using a commercial kit (INEP-Zemun, Serbia) and triglycerides using commercial kit BioMerieux (France). It was shown that serum triglycerides concentration decreased from 0.31 mmol/l to 0.30 mmol/l after parturition. The results of the study also indicated that the lipid-mobilization from fat tissue, represented as the NEFA concentration, was significantly lower in pregnant cows (0.40+/-0.25 mmol/l) in comparison to the cows in early lactation (0.60+/-0.12 mmol/l).
