Forest biomass utilization, as the renewable source of energy, has been gaining an increasing significance throughout the world, which is also expected in future in Serbia. Forest biomass utilization for energy requires the modern technological solutions, so as to reduce the production costs to the minimum. This refers, first of all, to the technical solutions of collection, packing, transport, storage, drying and chipping of forest biomass. In Serbia today, forest biomass utilization is not at the appropriate level, considering the raw material base and the potentials of its widening, for several reasons. A more significant biomass use requires, primarily, the legal and administration preconditions. The raw material potential of forest biomass in Serbia can be increased by the establishment of the new forest areas, and especially by the establishment of special-purpose short rotation plantations on both forest and agricultural lands.
