Analysis of fertility components of alfalfa in open pollination
2006
Ilic, O.(Poljoprivredni fakultet, Novi Sad (Serbia))
A survey of fertility components (inflorescence length, number of florets per inflorescence, number of pods per inflorescence, number of seeds per pod) of 17 genetic divergent genotypes of alfalfa under conditions of open pollination (polycross) obtained during the two-year examination,, was presented. The average inflorescence length of alfalfa genotypes was 2.48 cm, that is 2.21-2.94 cm, while the number of florets per inflorescence ranged from 19.1-31.7, or 25.6 on the average. For both properties, significant differences between genotypes were deduced (CV=7.96%, as to 12.21%). Considering the measured inflorescence lengths and the counted number of florets per inflorescence, the main inflorescence density was 0.97 florets/mm of inflorescence length. The average number of pods per inflorescence was 12.2 with 4.5 seeds per pod. Differences in the numbers of pods per inflorescence and the numbers of seeds per pod were significant, as indicated by the respective variation coefficients (CV=9.75%. i.e CV=10.56%).
