The cultivation of tribenuron-tolerant sunflower hybrids and the incorporation of tribenuron-methyl into the existing sunflower herbicide range should result in the advancement of the current chemical weed control practice in this crop. Advantages of this weed control system include unique ability to control Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense): economically more favourable control of certain annual broadleaved weeds; flexibility of tribenuron-methyl use relative to crop growth stage; reduced herbicide rate per hectare; no restriction on the choice of the subsequent crops and others.
