Genus Alternaria includes many important phytopathogenic species and represents probably the most controversial group of plant pathogens. These fungi are widely distributed in nature and participate in processes of decomposition of organic material, may cause serious plant diseases (mainly on vegetables and ornamentals), many of species are extremely toxigenic, and recently established as causal agents of human and animal diseases. Because of all mentioned, more attetion should be paid to these important fungi in domestic scientific and agricultural public.
