The quality of surface water in the Cabaj stream (Nitra region) was monitored once a month from March 1999 to February 2001. The occurrence of microorganisms important both from the hygienic (coliform bacteria) and ecological (microscopic fungi, myxobacteria and actinomycetes) aspects was used to determine the sources and a level of the stream contamination. The Cabaj stream water was of very good microbiological quality. During the whole experimental period, it corresponded to quality class I in 52 to 77% of the samples. The contamination of stream was significantly affected by communal waste from the villages of Mojmirovce and Cabaj-Capor. The occurrence of actinomycetes confirmed substantial contamination by difficult biodegradable organic substances, especially in the lower part of the stream. There was a slightly linear correlation between the occurrence of coliform bacteria, myxobacteria and actinomycetes. Thirty one species of soil microscopic fungi were identified in the water of the Cabaj stream. The following representatives of soil fungi were found to be the most frequent, with maximum values in June: Aspergillus fumigatus, Penicillium sp., Trichoderma sp., Aspergillus flavus and Cladosporium sp.
